Working Together to Improve Women’s Lives

2015 Easter Basket Exchange with Sen. Thielen

Each year the Legislative Women’s Caucus donates Easter Baskets to the needy through the Institute for Human Services (l-r: Rep. Thielen, “The Easter Bunny (Rep. Feki) and Senator Thielen.

Once again this year Rep. Thielen served as a co-convener of the bi-partisan 2015 Women’s Legislative Caucus which introduced a package of bills covering concerns of women of all ages and economic backgrounds. For over 20 years this Caucus, consisting of all Senate and House female members, has worked diligently in drafting and passing legislation which improves women’s quality of life while protecting their safety and rights. Highlights of this year’s package included legislation which provided for quality improvements in maternal and child health; offered services for young girls who have suffered traumatic events in their lives; tackled violence against women and measures to stop human trafficking; restored funding for domestic violence prevention; and included a resolution asking for the University of Hawaii’s dedication in ending all forms of sexual violence on Hawai‘i campuses through a report on the status of Title IX and VAWA 2013 policies, procedures, staffing and statistics.

Although a number of these bills did not pass this session, they will be carried over to 2016, which is the second half of the biennium. Especially important this year was the progress made on developing meaningful laws which will reduce and hopefully one day eliminate sex trafficking in our islands.
